The whole of Poland was talking about Błaszczykowski’s penalty. He finally explained it
In 2016, the Polish national team made its compatriots proud. The players, led by Adam Nawałka, won match after match and were not afraid of anyone in Europe. They went to the French championship as potential dark horse of the tournament. And in fact – they started with a victory against Northern Ireland. Later they drew 0-0 with Germany, and in the end they beat Ukraine.
Jakub Błaszczykowski was an outstanding figure in the Polish team. The winger, who had problems playing regularly in Fiorentina, he looked great during the tournament. He fueled attacks on the right side of the pitch and was effective. He assisted Arkadiusz Milik against Northern Ireland. He also scored a goal in the final match against Ukraine.
In the 1/8 finals, Poles faced Switzerland. The bar has been raised, but this time the White and Reds coped with the challenge. After 120 minutes the score was 1-1 and Błaszczykowski scored the goal. The Poles were better in the penalty shootout thanks to this they reached the quarterfinals.

In the fight for the best four of Euro, Adam Nawałek’s players met Portugal. Our team quickly took the lead – already in the second minute. However, the Portuguese equalized before the break. No more goals were scored and after 120 minutes of play a series of elevens was necessary. Almost everyone shot flawlessly. Almost, because Only Jakub Błaszczykowski was wrong.
– I was very nervous then. When I returned to the boys in the middle of the field, I kept hoping that someone from Portugal wouldn’t take advantage of it. After the competition ended, it was difficult for me – said Błaszczykowski in the film “Kuba”.
To this day, the memory of this penalty still evokes memories for the footballer big emotions.
I think this situation will stay with me for the rest of my life. It was one of the most important moments in my career.

In the film, we also learn from Błaszczykowski’s wife that after the match against Portugal, turned off the phone and he didn’t speak to anyone. The woman admitted that her husband called her only before noon the next day. – He had a terrible voice – recalled Agata Błaszczykowska.
Portugal then stayed European championdefeating the hosts – France in the final.
